Reverend David O. Guss
Leading Our Prayers
Our congregation comes together before God under the leadership of The Reverend David O. Guss. A passionate speaker, a beacon of knowledge and a spiritual guide — we’re proud to call Pastor Guss our leader and a great example for all of our members.
The Reverend David O. Guss is a native of Pennsylvania and the son of Lutheran Pastor, The Reverend Jerome V. Guss. Pr. Guss’ brother, The Reverend Vincent J. Guss is also a Lutheran Pastor who presently serves as a chaplain in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Pr. David Guss holds a B.A. Degree in Education from Messiah College, Grantham, PA, an M.Ed. degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA. Prior to attending the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC where he graduated with a M. Div. Degree in May 1985, Pr. Guss taught for six years in the public schools of Pennsylvania. Most recently, Pr. Guss earned an Ed.S. Specialist Degree in Mental Health Counseling in December 2005 and a Ph.D. Degree in Marriage and Family and Couples Counseling in December 2010 from Barry University, Miami Shores, FL. While serving several pastorates within the Florida- Bahamas Synod, Pr. Guss has also serves as a counselor in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Presently Pr. Guss holds the position of Adjunct Professor where he teaches prospective counselors in the graduate counseling department of Barry University. Pr. Guss is also a professionally trained musician who had the great fortune of studying with renown German organist and composer Jan Oskar Bender while attending seminary. Pr. Guss’ favorite past times include reading, going to the beach, music, and spending time with his pet Yorkshire Terriers – Coco, Buttercup, Sasha, and Smokey.
Ordained on December 13, 1987, Pr. Guss was the last pastor ordained in the ELCA’s predecessor’s body, the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). Pr. Guss accepted his first call as Assistant Pastor at First Lutheran Church, Fort Lauderdale in December 1987. He received his second call as Assistant Pastor at All Saints Lutheran Church, Tamarac, in August 1991. In March 1994, Pr. Guss became Senior Pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Hallandale Beach. In August 2011, Pr. Guss accepted Bishop’s invitation to also serve as Interim Pastor at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Miami Gardens.
Pr. Guss is grounded in the Lutheran tradition yet lacks no timidity when it comes to sharing his love for the Lord and his testimony of faith with others. Pr. Guss’ favorite Bible verse Romans 8:28: “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” This verse sums up Pr. Guss understanding of mission and servant hood. When Pr. Guss was called to serve as pastor of St. Mark's, he stated, “If it is the Lord’s will that I am called to serve as pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, I will consider it an honor to serve in this time and place and look forward to working “together” with all those who love God – “doing” and “accomplishing” all things according his purpose.”
If you need to speak to the pastor or set up an appointment, please make arrangements with Josie Largacha, our Administrative Assistant, in advance.
